Chelsea looking to ‘poach’ Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong from under Manchester United
Premier League rivals Chelsea are looking to ‘poach’ Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong from under Manchester United, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t The Sun).
Both the Red Devils and the Blues are interested in the Holland international. In the summer of 2022, the Old Trafford side made several attempts to acquire his services. The Stamford Bridge side also made a bid for the midfielder but to no avail.
The 25-year-old wanted to stay with the Blaugrana and still has the same idea. However, the Camp Nou side’s financial issues could see him being forced out.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta and head coach Xavi realise they can solve their monetary problems by selling De Jong. If the Spanish giants cannot mend their circumstances, they may be unable to sign players in the upcoming transfer window.
Chelsea plan on making a £70 million offer to acquire the Holland international’s services. Graham Potter’s team was already strengthened in January with the addition of Enzo Fernandez.
The Blues also have the likes of Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Denis Zakaria, Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in their ranks.
United bolstered their engine room last summer with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. However, Ten Hag is eyeing a reunion with De Jong at the end of the campaign.
For most of the season, the Dutch manager has relied on the Brazil and Denmark internationals in the middle of the park. However, the gaffer is looking to pair the Barcelona midfielder with the former Real Madrid star in Manchester.
