Newcastle United ‘favourites’ to sign out-of-favour Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire
Premier League rivals Newcastle United are seen as the ‘favourites’ to sign out-of-favour Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Magpies are eyeing a move for the 30-year-old in the upcoming transfer window. There has been constant speculation regarding the England international in the current campaign.
Eddie Howe’s team are interested in acquiring the centre-back’s services. Although, other English top-flight sides like West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keen on him.
However, with the Tyneside outfit likely to qualify for European competition, they seemingly have an advantage. The Saudi-backed club have spent most of the season in the top four.
But Newcastle’s recent form has seen them slip down the table. They are currently sixth. Howe’s team do have games in hand over Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, though.
Maguire made his way to Man United in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. The England international has been one of the first names on the Red Devils’ team sheet over the years.
However, in the current campaign, the 30-year-old has lost his place in the starting lineup. The centre-back has had to settle for a place on the bench under Erik ten Hag, starting just five games in the league.
This season, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have been the gaffer’s preferred duo in the backline. The France and Argentina internationals have formed a steady partnership at the Old Trafford side.

It is not beyond imagination to think that a player like Maguire will want a starring role in the team. However, it looks unlikely that the 30-year-old will be able to pip the others in the pecking order anytime soon. Therefore, will the English national move to Newcastle? Only time will tell.
