Manchester United are ‘ready’ to double the wages of Inter Milan defender and Italy international Alessandro Bastoni, according to Caught Offside (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils are eyeing a move for the centre-back in the upcoming transfer window. At the moment, the 23-year-old’s contract with the Nerazzurri expires in the summer of 2024.

As a result, the Old Trafford side are looking to entice Bastoni, who the Serie A giants could be forced to cash in on next summer. However, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the Italian.

Spurs have struggled at the back in the current campaign. The North London side have not looked steady with the trio of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies in defence.

The 23-year-old has been impressive at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza side over the years. He signed for them in the summer of 2017 and became an established member of the team after spending a couple of seasons out on loan.

In the current campaign, Bastoni has been one of the first names on the team sheet for Inter. The 23-year-old has made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Nerazzurri. However, Simone Inzaghi’s team have not hit the heights of previous campaigns this time around.

Erik ten Hag has decent depth in the centre-back position at United. The Dutch manager has called upon Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martine on most occasions this season.

As a result, Harry Maguire, along with Victor Lindelof, has had to bide his time for opportunities. The England international has lost his influence in the team and has mostly been on the bench under the new gaffer.

Therefore, if the 30-year-old or the Sweden international were to leave the Old Trafford side, we would evidently need to add reinforcements at the back. Bastoni is a young and talented defender. But it remains to be seen whether we will be able to acquire the Italian’s services any time soon.
