Erik ten Hag wants Carabao Cup win to be “inspiration” for more success at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants the win over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final to be an “inspiration” for more success going forward.
The Red Devils took on Eddie Howe’s team at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (26 February). Ultimately, the Old Trafford side managed to end their six-year trophy drought with a 2-0 win over the Magpies.
Speaking to the media after the victory via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag was delighted with the Manchester-based club winning a title. The Dutch manager wants the win to set a standard for the team.
“We are really happy tonight and, once again, it has to be an inspiration. It will help and it will bring even more confidence, as long as we don’t go over the top in confidence, as long as we keep doing the right things, the right stuff, keep working on the bond with the fans then we can win even more.”
Newcastle looked threatening in the first half. The Magpies created several opportunities. However, they were unable to make the most of their chances.
On the other hand, while Man United were a bit on the back foot for the first 45 minutes, we capitalised on the Tyneside outfit’s mistakes.
At around the half-hour mark, the Red Devils were awarded a free kick out wide. Luke Shaw’s delivery into the opposition box was brilliant as Casemiro got his head to it and found the back of the net.
While the Brazil international had an anxious wait due to a VAR check, he was eventually deemed correctly onside. The 31-year-old has been a pivotal player for the Old Trafford side in the current campaign.
Howe’s team showed no signs of backing down. Thankfully, in the 39th minute, Marcus Rasfhord’s attempt deflected off of Sven Botman and gave the Manchester-based club a two-goal lead.

In the second half, Man United had a bit more control of the match. We ended up lifting much-needed silverware. In 2017, Jose Mourinho achieved the same feat. However, the Red Devils were unable to kick on from there. Hopefully, things will be different under Ten Hag.
