David Raya reveals turning down two Brentford contracts amidst Manchester United interest
Brentford shot-stopper David Raya has revealed that he has turned down two contract proposals from the Bees recently amidst interest from Manchester United.
Since last season, the 27-year-old has been in fine form for Thomas Frank’s team. However, the Spain international’s current contract with the West London club expires in the summer of 2024.
Speaking to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t The Sun], Raya has not ruled out leaving Brentford in the coming months. The Spaniard aspires to play in the biggest of competitions and challenge for trophies.
“I turned down two contracts, one last year and one this January. They weren’t the offers we were looking for. I can only say that. I have a contract here, so I’m willing to finish that, but you never know what’s going to happen in the summer.
“I want to play in Europe and I want to fight to win a title. I want to fight to win a European title. I trust myself to be able to play in those types of games.”
At the moment, David de Gea is the number one at United. The 32-year-old has been Erik ten Hag’s first choice in between the sticks this season. He has pulled off some brilliant saves under the Dutch manager.
However, the Spain international deal with the Red Devils expires at the end of the campaign. Apart from the former Atletico Madrid star, the Dutch manager has Tom Heaton and Jack Butland at his disposal.
Apart from the Old Trafford side, Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring Raya. Spurs could look to replace Hugo Lloris with the 27-year-old. Antonio Conte has Fraser Forster and Alfie Whiteman in his ranks.
The French national’s contract with the North London side runs until the summer of 2024. However, the 36-year-old is evidently in the final years of his career. Also, in recent seasons, the veteran goalkeeper has not been consistent.
Brentford’s shot-stopper has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season. The Bees have conceded 31 goals and the Spaniard has kept eight clean sheets. The West London club are currently ninth in the Premier League, 10 points off the top four.
