David de Gea equals clean sheet record of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel
Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea has equalled the clean sheet record of ex-Red Devil Peter Schmechel at the club after denying Leicester City, via Manchester Evening News.
The Old Trafford side welcomed the Foxes on Sunday (19 February) in the Premier League. Brendan Rodgers’ team gave us a tough fight in the opening 45 minutes. However, in the end, the match ended in a 3-0 win for the Manchester-based outfit.
While we got the victory, it also ended up being a special moment for our 32-year-old goalkeeper, who had to work for it, with an impressive save from Kelechi Iheanacho’s header. The Spain international matched Schmeichel’s record of 180 clean sheets in a United shirt.
The Denmark international spent eight years as the number one at the Old Trafford side between 1991 and 1999. During his time at the club, the shot-stopper won several league titles.
In the 1998/99 season, the 59-year-old was also a pivotal member of our Champions League-winning team. The Red Devils beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the famous final, with Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scoring in stoppage time.
De Gea signed for United in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. Initially, the Spain international found it difficult to get settled in the English top flight.

However, the 32-year-old soon became an important player for the Red Devils. The shot-stopper also garnered the reputation of being one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
But De Gea’s time in Manchester was not without its struggles. There was a period after the 2018 World Cup where the Spaniard looked short on confidence.
