FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa seen as the replacement for David de Gea at Manchester United
Manchester United are ‘keen’ on replacing David de Gea with FC Porto shot-stopper and Portugal international Diogo Costa, according to A Bola (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 32-year-old is the current number one at the Old Trafford side. However, the Spaniard’s existing contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of the season.
However, the Manchester-based club are in negotiations with him over a new deal. But nothing has been finalised as of yet.
Costa recently signed a new deal with the Primeira Liga outfit. The 23-year-old also has a €75 million release clause. The Dragoes are expected to demand that amount to part ways with the Portuguese.
In the previous campaign, the shot-stopper broke into Sérgio Conceicao’s team. Since then, he has not looked back, cementing his place in the starting lineup.
Costa has been especially impressive this season. In 26 appearances in all competitions for Porto, the 23-year-old has kept 13 clean sheets. His distribution from out the back has also been impressive.
The Portugal international also caught a lot of people’s attention with his performances in the Champions League group stages. However, the shot-stopper was a bit underwhelming in the 2022 World Cup.
At the moment, De Gea is the first choice in between the sticks for Erik ten Hag. The Spain international has been one of our best players since last season. However, while the 32-year-old has been great, he leaves a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet.
