Erik ten Hag ‘considering’ dropping Wout Weghorst for Manchester United rematch vs Leeds United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is ‘considering’ dropping Wout Weghorst from the starting lineup in the rematch against Leeds United, according to The Sun.
The 30-year-old started in our previous fixture against the Peacocks on Wednesday (8 February) at Old Trafford in the Premier League. Unfortunately, the Red Devils ended up dropping two points.
Wilfried Gnonto opened the scoring for the West Yorkshire-based club in the first minute of the match. While Man United had the opportunities to equalise, they failed to take them.
Subsequently, Leeds doubled their lead at the start of the second half after Raphael Varane scored an own goal. Thankfully, the Red Devils had the mettle to make a comeback.
Weghorst was a passenger for most of the match. The Holland international struggled to get into the game and failed to produce anything of substance in the final third.
At around the hour mark, Ten Hag decided to replace the on-loan striker for Jadon Sancho. Subsequently, Marcus Rashford was moved to the middle of the attack and found the back of the net almost immediately.
Then, in the 70th minute, Sancho got the equaliser for the Old Trafford side. The former Borussia Dortmund star has not played much football since the 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the league.
Weghorst has started in every match since his arrival from Burnley in January. The Holland international has found the back of the net just once in seven appearances in all competitions.
While the 30-year-old had a good reputation in Germany, last season, he struggled in the English top flight with Burnley. The tall striker is evidently having to play so much football for Man United due to Anthony Martial’s fitness issues.
