Danny Murphy has urged Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane to snub Manchester United’s interest
Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy, while writing in his column at Daily Mail (h/t Manchester Evening News) believes that Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane should snub a move to Manchester United.
Kane’s current contract at Spurs expires at the end of June 2024 and many believe that the 30-year-old would not sign a new contract and could look for a way out.
The summer transfer window provides the perfect opportunity for top clubs to test Daniel Levy’s resilience in keeping Kane at the club with United touted as one of the possible destinations for the England captain.
Murphy, however, believes that Kane should snub a move to United and rather believes FC Bayern Munich is the best possible option for the player considering he does not have much time left to be part of a team that is going through a transition.
“If Bayern Munich come calling this summer, he should go. It would be hugely sad if a player of his quality finished [his career] without winning a trophy. It’s something he himself would regret after retirement.
He turns 30 this summer, it’s getting to that now-or-never stage – but it shows how good his form is that one of the biggest clubs in Europe are still interested.
I’m sure Kane will get other offers. Manchester United have been mentioned, but he hasn’t got time to be part of a team that is building. If he was going to leave, it would be primarily to win trophies from the get-go, which would make Bayern his best option.”
Murphy is correct in his assessment that under Erik ten Hag, United are in a work in progress. Although everyone can agree that we are moving in the right direction, there is no guarantee that we would be there next season competing for the league title and other major trophies.
Bayern, on the other hand, are the best team in Germany and the favourite to win the Bundesliga every year while being a big threat in the UEFA Champions League.
Kane has three to four years of competing at the maximum level and he should maximise the opportunity if one arises. By surpassing Jimmy Greaves as the highest goalscorer at Spurs, there is nothing much left to achieve for the forward at his current club anymore.
Moreover, United signing Kane could also have its pros and cons. While he would guarantee 20-25 goals for the team, it would be challenging for the player and manager to blend in with the dynamics of the squad.
On the other hand, SSC Napoli’s Victor Osimhen represents a better prospect as he is young, pacey, dribbles well and could give a number of years to United. However, it is hard to tell how a foreign player will adjust – and if they will adjust – to Premier League football. That’s a risk we may have to take.

With Kane( 29), we may have to be in the market for a new striker again after two to three seasons and it is better to think about the long-term plan than the short-term gains that also have the potential to disrupt the current dynamics in the squad.
