Manchester United are interested in signing Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are interested in 30-year-old Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias and faces competition from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Erik ten Hag’s first six months at the club have given him a fair idea of the squad at hand and where all improvements need to be made.
After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo mid-season, Wout Weghorst was signed on a loan deal but the move is seen as a stop-gap rather than a permanent solution.
Ten Hag is keen to add a proper number nine to the squad to bolster the team’s rapid development and Iglesias is one name which is being mentioned.
Although the Spanish star is not very prolific in front of goal with 44 goals for Real Betis in 145 appearances, the uncertainty surrounding Anthony Martial’s future could lead to United looking at Iglesias as a backup option.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, SSC Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Juventus striker Dusan Vlahvovic have been touted as potential targets for the summer transfer window. They could prove to be better options, given Iglesias is already 30 and hasn’t really set the world alight in the manner that the three aforementioned names have.
Ten Hag’s current signings at the club have done exceptionally well and hence there is full trust in the manager that if he is looking at the profile of Iglesias to potentially be part of the team in the future, we need to back the manager’s vision.
The Dutch manager has been tremendous since his appointment and has shut any doubts about whether he is the right man for the job.
Now the board, albeit with new ownership, needs to fully back the manager to allow him to create a squad that can challenge for the highest laurels in world football.
