Atletico Madrid-bound Memphis Depay deal rejected by Manchester United due to contract demand

Manchester United rejected the chance to bring Atletico Madrid-bound Memphis Depay back to the club due to his demand for a long-term contract, according to The Athletic (h/t Express).

The Holland international was linked with a return to the Old Trafford side in recent weeks. However, the Red Devils opted against the 28-year-old’s signature in light of him wanting a lengthy deal.

Now, Depay looks set to join Atletico Madrid from Barcelona. Los Rojiblancos are close to sealing a move for the forward to bolster their forward line.

Diego Simeone’s team have lost two attacking options in the ongoing transfer window. Matheus Cunha joined Wolverhampton Wanderers permanently. On the other hand, Joao Felix made his way to Chelsea on loan for the rest of the season.

The Holland international was once a United player when we signed him back in the summer of 2015. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old’s stint in Manchester was underwhelming for the most part.

As a result, the former PSV Eindhoven star joined Olympique Lyon a season-and-a-half later. In France, the attacker revived his reputation and got Barcelona’s attention.

However, since Xavi’s arrival in the Camp Nou side’s dugout, Depay has found game time hard to come by. Injuries have not helped his cause either in the current campaign.

United have signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley for the rest of the season. The 30-year-old made his debut for the Red Devils against Crystal Palace in the 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

However, the former Wolfsburg striker is just a short-term option. The Old Trafford side seemingly did not want to make a commitment with Depay this month. It remains to be seen who we will go after in the summer of 2023.
