Alvaro Fernandez snubbed European giants Real Madrid due to Manchester United “plan”

Manchester United starlet Alvaro Fernandez has revealed that he snubbed Real Madrid because the Red Devils showed the youngster exactly how they would “plan” for his future.

The 19-year-old joined the Old Trafford side from the Spanish giants’ youth academy in September 2020. Subsequently, the club put him straight into the U23 side.

Speaking to The One And Only via pnefc.net (h/t Manchester Evening News), Fernandez disclosed that he rejected an offer from Los Blancos. He ditched the La Liga outfit to come to Manchester and gain much-needed experience.

“Real Madrid offered me another deal, but I said no, because I wanted to go to Manchester United. I chose them because they’re a big club and they showed me exactly how they were going to plan my football career.

“They told me I would go to the U23s even though I was 17. I came here and played with the U23s, which was good for me and the experience was great.”

The 19-year-old had joined Madrid from Deportivo de La Coruna when he was 13. However, after four years in the Spanish capital, United were successful in pursuing him to come to England.

In the previous campaign, the Spanish national was named the U23 team’s player of the season. The youngster also made the senior side’s bench in the previous campaign but has not made his first-team debut yet.

Fernandez joined Preston North End on loan in the previous transfer window. He has been an important player for the Championship team this season.

In the current campaign, the 19-year-old has made 23 appearances in all competitions for the Lancashire-based club. He has provided four assists overall for them.

At United, Diogo Dalot has been the first-choice right-back this season. The Portuguese has played a pivotal role under Erik ten Hag. In recent weeks, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has also been handed a few opportunities and has done well.

However, the 25-year-old has fallen down the pecking order and is behind the former FC Porto star. Thus, if the England U21 international opts to leave the club in the coming months, Fernandez looks like a decent player to deputise for Dalot in Manchester.
