Wout Weghorst misses Besiktas training ahead of anticipated Manchester United move
According to @gokmenozcan (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Dutch striker Wout Weghorst missed Besiktas training yesterday ahead of an anticipated move to Manchester United.
Romano revealed yesterday that Man United had reached a full verbal agreement to sign Weghorst on loan from Burnley for the rest of the season but he did add a caveat that Besiktas would agree only if they found a suitable replacement.
In line with that development, it looks like the striker has decided to skip training as he looks to complete his desired loan transfer to Old Trafford. All signs indicate that the deal could happen imminently for Man United.
Weghorst is on the wishlist of Erik ten Hag. With the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo who mutually terminated his contract with the club, the Red Devils needed reinforcements in the striker’s position and little did we know that Weghorst would be the chosen one.
In terms of profile, Ronaldo and Weghorst are night and day but one common thing between the two forwards is the fact that they know where the back of the net is. The Dutchman most recently showed this in the World Cup in the game against Argentina.
Weghorst came on in that game with his side trailing 0-2 to the eventual winners. He turned the game around with a quick brace to send the game into extra time but the South American nation eventually triumphed on penalties.
Ideally, Man United and Erik ten Hag are likely to be using Weghorst in a similar manner. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial rightfully deserve to be ahead of the Dutchman in the pecking order.
However, when everything else fails and Man United need something completely different, the 30-year-old is an interesting solution. With willing crossers like Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandez and Christian Eriksen, Weghorst can use his aerial ability to affect games in dire situations.

The fact that he is only coming here on loan means that this is a low-risk high reward signing for Man United. Only time will tell how this pans out.
