Manchester United ‘accept’ they overspent on transfer of Antony from Ajax in summer of 2022
Manchester United ‘accept’ that they overspent to bring Antony to the Old Trafford side from Ajax in the previous transfer window, according to ESPN (h/t Metro).
The Brazilian signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2022. We bought the 22-year-old from the Amsterdam-based club for £85 million.
As of yet, the winger has been decent for us in the current campaign. He has found the back of the net five times in 16 appearances in all competitions for the Manchester-based club.
However, Antony’s price tag has not justified his performances so far. However, United believe they had to pay over the odds because of three key reasons.
First, the Red Devils feel there is a lack of players of the Brazilian’s profile. Thus, more clubs would eventually have been in the race to sign the forward in 2023. Also, the Old Trafford side have made an investment in the 22-year-old considering his potential.
Finally, Antony was keen on making a move to United in the previous transfer window. The Brazilian was looking to reunite with former head coach Erik ten Hag at Ajax. As a result, the Red Devils were ‘impressed’ by the winger’s attitude.
The 22-year-old has been a mainstay in the Dutch manager’s plans at the Old Trafford side. He had a quick start to life in Manchester, scoring in his first three Premier League appearances.
However, in recent weeks, Antony has been a bit underwhelming. The 22-year-old has not been consistent enough with his displays at United.

The Brazilian’s price tag has not helped his cause. But we have got a forward who showed a lot of promise at Ajax. And in the end, if the winger lives up to the expectations, the talk about the amount the Red Devils paid for him will be secondary.
