Fabrizio Romano confirms agreement between Manchester United and Besiktas for Wout Weghorst
Fabrizio Romano via his Twitter has confirmed the agreement between Manchester United and Besiktas JK for the signing of Wout Weghorst on a loan deal for the next six months.
United will pay Besiktas a loan fee of €3m for Weghorst, who is on loan at the Turkish club from Burnley and pending medical, other necessary requirements have been agreed upon.
Erik ten Hag was quite open about needing a new forward in the transfer window to bolster the team’s chance to finish in the top four.
Currently fourth in the league but with 21 games still to go, it is a long season ahead and hence, the signing of an out-and-out forward in Weghorst makes complete sense.
After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, there was an absence of a typical no. 9 at the club with Anthony Martial also preferring to be part of the play rather than waiting in the box for an opportunity.
Weghorst, at 6’6, certainly provides us with a different dimension in an attack that can be extremely helpful during the latter stages of the game where we would need a big man in the box.
Certainly, Ten Hag would have wanted to sign a more elite forward only if his hands were not tied due to the situation around the change of ownership which only allowed the club loan deals for this window.
Ten Hag identified Weghorst as a target due to their spending time at FC Twente together and hence he knows what his compatriot could offer.
A six-month loan deal on a minimal fee suit all parties and although Weghorst’s first time in England was not fruitful where he scored 2 goals in 20 games, his record with Vfl Wolfsburg and now Besiktas show that he could crunch up the numbers when asked for.
He recently grabbed headlines after scoring two quick goals against eventual winners Argentina in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals and although the Netherlands lost out on penalties, he certainly showed that he is capable of making an impact from the bench.
