Former Manchester United ace Louis Saha has told the Red Devils to sign Chelsea star Edouard Mendy if David de Gea does not extend his contract.

The Spain international’s existing deal expires at the end of the season. As a result, the Old Trafford side have been urged to look at the Blues’ 30-year-old shot-stopper if the former Atletico Madrid star leaves.

Speaking to BoyleSports (h/t Mirror), Saha, who spent four years at United, believes the Red Devils should pursue Mendy in case De Gea opts against extending his stay at the club.

“If De Gea doesn’t sign a new contract then a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would make perfect sense. He has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world the last few years and I’m not sure what happened.”

The Senegal international signed for the Stamford Bridge side in the summer of 2020 from Stade Rennais. In his debut season in West London, the 30-year-old won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel.

Mendy has been ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga for most of his time at Chelsea. However, in the current campaign, the Senegalese has lost his place in the Blues’ starting lineup.

The 30-year-old has looked shaky in between the sticks for the Stamford Bridge side in recent months. As a result, the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations winner has lost his place to the former Athletic Bilbao star in West London.

De Gea has been in fine form for United since last season. The shot-stopper has been one of our best players over the years. He did have a few underwhelming years in Manchester, but the 32-year-old has bounced back admirably.

Under Erik ten Hag, the Spaniard had a bad start to the campaign. However, since then, he has made some great saves and has hardly made any errors.

Although, if the Red Devils were to replace De Gea, Mendy does not seem to be the right choice. Apart from being low on confidence at the moment, just like the Spaniard, the Senegalese also leaves a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet. Thus, a younger, modern goalkeeper makes much more sense for a team managed by Ten Hag.
