Claims linking Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to Aston Villa are wide off the mark
According to Fabrizio Romano via his Twitter, claims to link Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to Aston Villa are completely off the mark and all parties involved have denied the rumour.
Harry Maguire’s move from Leicester City to Manchester United was met with a lot of excitement as being our answer to the signing of Virgil van Dijk by Liverpool.
Things did not go exactly as planned and after a good first season under Ole Gunner Solskjaer in which the team finished second in the league, it has just been downhill for the England defender.
The dismal showings last season coupled with the huge fee that United paid to secure his services made Maguire the scapegoat when honestly, it was a bad season for all the players and staff involved.
However, it seems like the defender has lost the confidence and belief of much of the fanbase which the newly developed centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez is too good to ignore.
Ever since Erik ten Hag has taken over as manager of Manchester United, he has not been able to trust Maguire into the starting line-up and the player is mostly making appearances off the bench although on paper he is still the captain of the football club.
It is rather befitting to see such a situation arise but with the manager’s preference to have a left-footed centre-back in the team, as was seen with the recent inclusion of Luke Shaw as centre-back over Maguire proving that the way up for the former Leicester man is tough.
Being a player for United brings a lot of scrutiny and every player is judged with a microscope. Maguire has been a pretty decent player for all his previous clubs and at big clubs like United, if one is not performing to the standards, one will definitely get caught out.
His lack of pace is a major worry in a side which is looking to play with a high line and overlapping fullbacks. This fact is something that even the opposition teams are aware of now.
There does not seem a possible solution on how the player would be able to rectify the current slump and slot back into the starting eleven, even though he was impressive for England at the FIFA World Cup 2022.

As mentioned above by Romano, Maguire moving to another club in January is out of the equation. However, if the same situation persists till the summer transfer window then we could actually see clubs going for him as the defender still has the capacity to be a first-team player in many teams.
