Manchester United’s Harry Maguire labelled ‘miserable’ for taking captain’s armband from Bruno Fernandes
Every single time Harry Maguire is substituted on for Manchester United, he takes the captain’s armband.
Bruno Fernandes being the vice captain of the club, has been the one handing him the band whenever he is wearing it and Maguire is introduced in the game. The England international started both of our first games this season in the Premier League.
After the two embarrassing losses, Maguire has never been a regular in manager Erik ten Hag’s starting XI, who kept him as the club’s captain when he took over. Recent weeks would have been demoralising for the former Leicester City centre-back.
Luke Shaw has been used by the Dutchman as a centre-back a couple of times despite Maguire being on the bench. He did this against Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Maguire should be removed as captain
We won both games, and Shaw then started again in our 3-1 win against Everton in the FA Cup. Maguire, instead, was handed 90 minutes in our 3-0 win over AFC Bournemouth.
Maguire has just 13 appearances for us across competitions, and only six have seen him play the match from the kick-off whistle. Now, former Manchester United player Paul Parker has slammed Maguire for taking the captain’s armband whenever he comes on.
The pundit told MyBettingSites (h/t Metro):
“Honestly, the situation with Harry Maguire is embarrassing now. The way he is taking away the armband from Bruno Fernandes is miserable.”
“He should never do that and Erik ten Hag needs to take the decision now to take away the armband from Maguire for good. I’m not sure that he will find a new club in January.”
Maguire seems to be catching for something he has no control over. As long as he is captain, Maguire will be wearing the armband whenever he is on the pitch – it is just normal code of conduct.
Here, the responsibility lies with Ten Hag. The former Ajax manager has to muster up the will to inform the Englishman that he is neither a regular in his starting XI nor the captain.

Given by how less he is starting, he seems to have done the first bit of that. Fernandes is a regular for us while Casemiro and David de Gea are real leaders at the back for us. Raphael Varane is also a big figure at the back and if the captain’s armband was up for grabs, these four should be in the conversation.
