Rio Ferdinand wants “clarity” on absence of Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has asked for “clarity” around the absence of Jadon Sancho, who has been training alone for some time now. The England international has not featured for the Red Devils since the 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old had been on an individual training program with Erik ten Hag stating that he was unfit. However, before the Old Trafford side’s last fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the gaffer revealed that the forward was ‘making progress’.
Speaking on Vibe with Five on YouTube (h/t Metro), Ferdinand, who spent 12 years at United, was concerned about Sancho’s absence. The former defender feels the club need the forward amidst the lack of options up front.
“Jadon Sancho is an interesting one man. He’s gone away and he’s doing personal training somewhere. I don’t know what’s happened or what’s behind all this. I don’t know what it is. Is he not fit or is it mental? What are they seeing at United? It would be nice to get that clarity.
“United actually need him right now, they need another player because the depth on the bench isn’t great.”
The 22-year-old joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2021 from Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately, the youngster has been unable to replicate the form he showed in Germany.
Last season, the England international failed to make a considerable impact in the team. While he started well under Erik ten Hag, the winger quickly lost his feet once again.
Sancho also missed out on Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup. The former BVB star had been a key player for the Three Lions during Euro 2020.
Unfortunately, the 22-year-old was unable to get back into the England mix like Marcus Rashford. The 25-year-old has been brilliant for the Old Trafford side in the current campaign and has become a pivotal player under the former Ajax head coach.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent exit from United has left us short in the attack. Anthony Martial is the only natural striker in the squad, while Rashford has also been deployed up front on several occasions. Thankfully, Alejandro Garnacho has stepped up in recent fixtures for the Red Devils.

Sancho is a world-class player when at his best. However, the 22-year-old needs to be more consistent for us. Hopefully, he can do that from here on out.
