Spain international Marco Asensio being eyed by Manchester United amidst Real Madrid contract expiry
Manchester United are ‘eyeing’ a move for Spain international and Real Madrid star Marco Asensio with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, according to Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils were linked with the 26-year-old’s signature in the recent transfer window. However, he ended up staying at Los Blancos. However, now, the forward could negotiate a pre-contract in January.
Asensio has been a squad player for Carlo Ancelotti since last season. The Old Trafford side are ‘willing’ to meet the forward’s wage demands of £7 million a year.
The Spaniard signed for Madrid in the summer of 2014 and joined Espanyol on loan. Subsequently, the 26-year-old came back to Los Blancos and established himself in the first team.
Asensio became a regular in the Santiago Bernabeu side’s attack at a time when they boasted the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale up front.
However, injuries have derailed the Spaniard’s career at Madrid. Now, the forward finds himself behind the likes of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo in the pecking order for a place on wings.
The 26-year-old featured for Luis Enrique’s team at the 2022 World Cup. He played in every game for La Furia Roja. However, Spain were knocked out by Morocco in the round of 16.
United signed Antony in the recent transfer window from Ajax. The Brazilian has made a place for himself in Manchester. Erik ten Hag has preferred the 22-year-old in his starting lineup since the forward’s arrival.

Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga are also capable of playing on the right-hand side of the attack. Asensio mainly plays on the right wing. But for now, a number nine is seemingly a priority for the Red Devils, considering Anthony Martial is the only natural striker in the squad at the moment.
