Manchester United ‘leading the race’ for Enzo Fernandez transfer for SL Benfica in January
Manchester United are currently leading the race to sign SL Benfica and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez in the upcoming transfer window, according to journalist Gaston Edul on Twitter (h/t The Sun).
The 21-year-old’s representatives have landed in potential and are ready to start negotiations if the midfielder’s £105 million release clause is triggered. Currently, the Red Devils have jumped ahead in the pursuit of his signature.
Premier League rivals Liverpool are also eyeing the youngster. The Merseyside outfit currently have an ageing engine room with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson and James Milner in it.
European giants Real Madrid are third in the pecking order to get Fernandez. Los Blancos already have a number of talented prospects in the middle of the park, with the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, Edouardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde.
The Argentina international signed for Benfica in the recent transfer window. He has since been a key player for Roger Schmidt’s team, who are unbeaten in all competitions this season.
At the 2022 World Cup, the 21-year-old shone for Lionel Scaloni’s team. In the end, La Albiceleste lifted the prestigious golden trophy in Qatar after beating France in the final.
United’s engine room is stacked with quality at the moment as well, with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes. The trio have been brilliant when they have played together in the midfield for us.
However, the Red Devils evidently lack strength in depth. Donny van de Beek has been underwhelming since his move from Ajax. On the other hand, Fred and Scott McTominay have failed to convince fans of their qualities over the years.
