Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez named Manchester United Fans’ Footballer of the Year 2022
Manchester United and Argentina star Lisandro Martinez has been named the Old Trafford side’s Fans’ Footballer of the Year 2022, as per Manchester Evening News.
Other players from the Red Devils, including Christian Eriksen, David de Gea and Diogo Dalot were also in the running for the honour. There were over 60,000 responses between that vote and the national prize.
United signed the 24-year-old from Ajax in the recent transfer window. He reunited with Erik ten Hag in Manchester, who was appointed the Red Devils’ head coach at the end of last season from the Amsterdam-based club.
Martinez has had an immediate impact on our backline. Initially, there were doubts over the centre-back’s stature. However, the Argentine has drowned out the noise with his performances on the pitch.
Ten Hag’s reign in the Old Trafford dugout started with back-to-back defeats. We lost the first two games in the Premier League against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
Subsequently, the gaffer made a few changes to the side. While the 24-year-old kept his place in the starting lineup, Harry Maguire was replaced with Raphael Varane.
Since then, The French national and the former Ajax defender have been relatively solid for us. Consequently, our captain has lost his place in the team.
While Martinez’s tenacity and aggression have made him a fan favourite at United, the centre-back put a feather in his cap in Qatar. The 24-year-old lifted the prestigious World Cup trophy in Qatar as Argentina defeated France.

While the 24-year-old did not feature in the final, he did play a pivotal role throughout the tournament. Now, the Red Devils have two World Cup-winning defenders in their backline. Hopefully, they can help bring some silverware to Old Trafford as well.
