Manchester United target Cody Gakpo has “very serious chance” of leaving PSV Eindhoven in January

Manchester United target and the Netherlands star Cody Gakpo could be on his way out of PSV Eindhoven in January. There is a “very serious chance” that the 23-year-old will leave the Eredivisie outfit in the winter transfer window.

Erik ten Hag has the Holland international at the top of his wishlist. Leeds United and Southampton were interested in his signature in the recent transfer window. However, the forward’s performances this season have alerted top clubs.

Cristiano Ronaldo recently departed the Red Devils. As a result, the Dutch manager’s options up front have dwindled. Now, the Old Trafford side have turned their attention to Gakpo to add reinforcements to the squad.

Speaking on his YouTube channel (h/t Express), transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed United’s interest in the 23-year-old. The Italian revealed PSV will likely allow the forward to leave if they receive more than £43 million for him in the winter window.

“Cody Gakpo is now showing on the best stage that he is ready for a top move. Manchester United wanted him in the summer, they are still in talks with people close to the player, but it’s not only Man United.”

“There are also other clubs in the race for Cody Gakpo. PSV’s original plan was to let him go in the summer and not in January, but now after this World Cup, if a bid of more than £43m will arrive, there is a chance for Gakpo to leave in January, and I’m told there is a very serious chance.”

Gakpo is currently shining for the Netherlands at the World Cup. The forward scored in every fixture of the group stage for Louis van Gaal’s team. Now, the Oranje have made it to the quarter-finals in Qatar, where they will face Argentina after beating the United States in the round of 16.

The 23-year-old has also been in good form for his club. He has made 24 appearances for the Red and Whites in the current campaign in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists.

Ten Hag only has Anthony Martial as a natural striker in his squad at the moment. The Dutch manager has also had to count on Marcus Rashford in the number nine position due to the French national’s injury issues.

The England international has been decent up front. He has scored eight goals in all competitions for the Old Trafford side, the most in the squad this season.

However, with Ronaldo’s untimely exit, the Red Devils evidently need to bolster the forward line. Thus, will Gakpo be the one the club will gamble on in January? Only time will tell.
