Manchester United’s Raphael Varane sends message after France qualify for World Cup QF
It is no secret that Manchester United superstar Raphael Varane is one of manager Didier Deschamps’ most trusted men in his France starting XI.
The former Real Madrid centre-back was an important presence in the French team that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He has retained that same level of importance in this edition as well.
Varane was notably not match-fit to start France’s opening 2022 FIFA World Cup group-stage game against Australia. Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate started alongside Dayot Upamecano at centre-back.
Despite a flawless performance from Konate, Varane was subsequently restored to Deschamps’ starting XI in the very next game. He also started the last 16 tie against Poland earlier today (4 December).
He would have ended the game with a deserved clean sheet if it wasn’t for an inadvertent handball by Upamecano in stoppage time with France already leading 3-0. Robert Lewandowski obliged and netted to make it 3-1.
After the match, Varane posted a message on his Instagram account which read:
“Quarter finals let’s gooo !![France flag] #AllezLesBleus:
France will now face the winners of the game between England and Senegal later today. Marcus Rashford is expected to play a starring role once again.
Our players have been doing brilliantly in the knockout stages so far, Tyrell Malacia may not be a first-choice pick for former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, but his Holland side are in the last eight as well.
