Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi open to loan move in January transfer window
Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi has revealed that he is open to leaving the Old Trafford side on loan in the January transfer window. The England U20 international is delighted to have returned from his injury.
The 20-year-old was sidelined for a long time after suffering a setback in March 2022. He was on loan at Birmingham City at the time. And the defender had to cut his spell short after hamstring issues.
Thankfully, Mengi returned to action for the Red Devils U21 side in October. Speaking on the club’s official website (h/t Manchester Evening News), the 20-year-old is delighted to have returned to action. And he is willing to depart the Old Trafford side to gain more experience.
“Every game, I’m feeling fitter, stronger, sharper,” he told club media.
“So yeah, I think I’m standing myself in good stead for January, if the option comes up for me to get an opportunity to go out on loan and impress and get some more experience, then I’ll take it.”
Mengi has been at United since a young age and has come up through the youth system. He made his debut for the Red Devils in August 2020. The 20-year-old came on as a substitute against Austrian outfit LASK in a 2-1 win in the Europa League round of 16 at Old Trafford.
The England U20 also made another appearance for the Manchester-based club in the Champions League last season. He played for around half an hour against BSC Young Boys in the final game of the group stages.
In the winter window of 2021, Mengi made his way to Derby County on a temporary deal. Back then, the Rams were being managed by United icon Wayne Rooney.
Centre-back is an area in which the Red Devils have a bunch of talent. Currently, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are Erik ten Hag’s preferred options in the backline.
However, the Dutch manager can also call upon Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. Although, our captain has fallen down the pecking order this season.
