Cristiano Ronaldo has released a statement after terminating Manchester United contract
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has released a statement thanking Manchester United fans for their support after mutually terminating his contract with the club and revealed that he was looking for a new challenge ahead.
Manchester United released a statement last night in which they confirmed that the two parties had come to a mutual agreement to terminate the 37-year-old’s contract with immediate effect. It did not come as a huge surprise though.
Ever since Ronaldo gave that explosive interview with Piers Morgan where he hit out at the club, the hierarchy and the manager, it was always a question of when rather than if the superstar would leave Old Trafford.
The timing of the contract termination is a little bit surprising coming just a day before Portugal’s opening game in the World Cup but then, the timing of the whole interview itself was very surprising, to begin with.
Perhaps it was done hurriedly to give both teams a sense of peace rather than dragging on a saga that would have surely distracted the two parties in their separate endeavours.
Ronaldo will now be seeking a new challenge elsewhere and there is no doubt that even at 37, he will be searching for a top European club that plays Champions League football and want to prove himself again.
The last few months of Ronaldo at Manchester United have been a pain to watch. The 37-year-old has been unable to score goals like he once used to and has looked like a pale shadow of his former self on the pitch.
Ronaldo is now in Qatar aiming to lead his side to World Cup glory. It is a trophy that has eluded the Portuguese forward throughout his career and he may be looking to have one last hurrah on the international stage.
It is best that the Ronaldo chapter at Manchester United ended right now. There is no doubting the 37-year-old’s legacy at the club but there was a feeling that it would only be tarnishing the longer he stayed here.
