Manchester United target and Spain star Marco Asensio hopes to extend stay at Real Madrid

Spain international Marco Asensio hopes to sign a new contract and extend his stay at Real Madrid amidst links to Manchester United. The 26-year-old would like to stay with Los Blancos for “10 more years”.

The forward is in the final year of his existing deal at the Santiago Bernabeu side. As a result, Premier League clubs, including the Red Devils, have been linked with the winger’s signature. And Carlo Ancelotti’s team were willing to part ways with him in the recent transfer window.

However, it seems Madrid have had a change of heart regarding Asensio. Speaking to Radio Marca (h/t Express), the 26-year-old has revealed he and the club will talk after the World Cup. And the forward is keen on putting pen to paper at the La Liga outfit.

“There is talk that I am changing Real Madrid’s mind. But I have always tried to give the best that I have inside and then it will be known. The one who decides, too, is the club, it does not only depend on me. After the World Cup, we’ll both make a decision.

“What if I want to renew? Hopefully it can happen and I’ll be very happy at Real Madrid for many years, hopefully everything will be given to stay for 10 more years.”

The Spaniard signed for the European champions from Mallorca in the summer of 2015. And the winger spent a fruitful season on loan at Espanyol before naming his mark at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Asensio started to establish himself in the forward line of a team with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema. As a result, most Madrid fans had high expectations from the 26-year-old.

However, injuries have been a setback for the forward during his time in the Spanish capital. And over the years, the winger has become a bit-part player for the La Liga outfit.

In the current campaign under Ancelotti, Asensio has made 15 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing three assists. However, he has only started one game for Madrid in the league.

United signed right winger Antony in the summer of 2022 to bolster the forward line. And while the Brazilian has had an impact in Manchester, most supporters feel we need another number nine in the squad.

The 26-year-old is currently with Spain at the World Cup in Qatar. However, the Red Devils seemingly do not need to prioritise another winger at the moment. Thus, the Old Trafford side would be smart to focus on other targets in the upcoming windows.
