Juventus and Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny on Manchester United radar

Poland and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is on the radar of Manchester United as the club look to add a new shot-stopper to their ranks, according to Calcio Mercato (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils aim to get their hands on the 32-year-old currently plying his trade in Italy. But the star of the Old Lady still has around 18 months remaining on his existing deal.

At the moment, David de Gea is the number one in between the sticks for the Old Trafford side. However, the Spaniard is in the final year of his contract. But the Manchester-based club do have the option to extend it for a further season.

As a result, United have been linked with bringing a new number one to Manchester. And Szczesny is one of the names on the list alongside Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and FC Porto star Diogo Costa.

The Poland international joined the Bianconeri in the summer of 2017 from Premier League outfit Arsenal. He had joined the North London side’s youth setup before moving up to the first team.

And the 32-year-old spent a few campaigns as a regular starter for the Gunners before being loaned out to Roma for two seasons. And after that, Juventus snapped him up.

Since then, Szczesny has been the first choice for the Serie A giants, replacing legendary shot-stopper Gianluigi Buffon. However, in recent weeks, Massimiliano Allegri’s team have found their feet and the Polish national has been a key part of their resurgence.

For United, De Gea has also been mesmerising this season. The 32-year-old had a shaky start to the campaign under Erik ten Hag. However, many fans feel the Spaniard has improved in various aspects, especially his distribution.

Szczesny is part of Poland’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. It remains to be seen how he does in Qatar. However, the shot-stopper’s age does not make him a compelling option to replace De Gea at the Old Trafford side.
