Wayne Rooney offers insight on why Harry Maguire has struggled at Man United
Speaking in an interview as quoted by Manchester Evening News, England legend Wayne Rooney has offered an insight on why Harry Maguire has struggled at Manchester United all these years and how he has been good for England.
Rooney has claimed that the lack of protection in front of him could be the reason for Maguire failing to show the same kind of form that he has shown for England. That is set to change with Casemiro now in front of him.
Manchester United have signed Casemiro from Real Madrid in the summer and the Brazilian is the perfect defensive midfielder who the Red Devils have desperately lacked over the past few seasons and he has already shown that.
The Reds Devils have started clicking better with Casemiro sitting in midfield and this has given Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes the freedom to roam forward and do what they do best, providing passes.
Harry Maguire on the other hand has lost his starting spot in the team to the likes of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez with the duo establishing themselves as the main centre-back partnership for Erik ten Hag.
Speaking about Harry Maguire, Rooney thinks that his club form will improve now with protection in front of him.
“He has performed better for England than he has for United — I think he would agree — and over the last couple of years, United have struggled. He hasn’t had much protection and it is no coincidence that now there is more stability in the middle of the pitch with Casemiro, United’s defenders are playing better”
Maguire has been subject to much criticism over the past few years and has really struggled to become the kind of centre-back that Manchester United wanted when they signed him for all the money from Leicester City.
The English centre-back needs to perform out of his skin to win back his position in the team. He is after all the captain of Man United and he needs to have a renaissance to displace either of Martinez or Varane.

A good World Cup could be a good place to start for Maguire. If he can do that, and other things go his way, Maguire could find himself as an important player for the Red Devils in the second half.
