According to The Express, Paul Merson has urged Chelsea to land out of favour Manchester United star Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils went big on the England international, making him the world’s most expensive defender in the summer of 2019. While the 29-year-old has had his moments, his overall spell at Old Trafford has been thoroughly underwhelming.

Ole Gunnar Solskajer even made Maguire the club skipper but that failed to improve his performances. One could argue that while the centre-back does his best, he is nowhere near the level to become Man United’s star defender.

Maguire’s struggle continued under interim boss Ralf Rangnick and this appears to have caught Erik ten Hag’s attention. The Dutchman brought in Lisandro Martinez with him from Ajax Amsterdam and the Argentine has replaced Maguire in the Man United lineup.

The 29-year-old is largely the third choice centre back at best at Old Trafford at this point in time. Man United appear ready to cut their losses and are seeking just £25million  to offload Maguire next summer.

While his time at the Theatre of Dreams was the stuff of nightmares, Paul Merson believes Maguire could do a job at another top English side, Chelsea. The Blues are in a sort of crisis themselves, following a recent set of reversals under Graham Potter.

“If I was Chelsea I would have gone for Harry Maguire, I would.”

Merson’s assessment is based on the assumption that Maguire can thrive in a three-man backline. It is a rather curious comment given that the likes of Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly both visibly lack pace. Adding Maguire to the list would at the very least guarantee some comedy in the Blues’ backline.

“He’s a good defender in a three. Chelsea have to play a three, he would have suited that. He’s an English player as well, sometimes they like English players.”

Maguire has our sympathy but it does not take away from the fact that he is an ill fit for Ten Hag’s system. He has been afforded several opportunities over the years but has come nowhere close to fulfilling his potential. Whether it be to Chelsea or otherwise, Man United will do well to cut their losses while they can.
