Manchester United are set to trigger the one-year extension in the contract of right-back Diogo Dalot to fend off interest from AC Milan and Barcelona, according to The Sun (h/t Mirror).

The Red Devils are keen to secure the Portugal international’s signature, with the player in the final year of his deal. And Erik ten Hag also wants the 23-year-old to stay at the club beyond this season.

United hope to discuss a new long-term deal further down the line amidst Dalot’s fine form. The right-back has cemented his place in the starting lineup in the current campaign.

The Portuguese star signed for the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2018 from FC Porto. However, he never managed to break into the first team and get regular minutes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferred Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the 23-year-old was reduced to a bit-part role.

Dalot also spent a season on loan with Serie A giants Milan in the 2019/20 campaign. He had a relatively fruitful spell with the Rossoneri. Upon his return to Manchester, the right-back was once again the understudy of the former Crystal Palace star.

However, with the departure of the Norwegian manager in the middle of last season, the Portuguese star got his opportunities. Ralf Rangnick gave the 23-year-old more game time.

And that trend has continued under Ten Hag. Dalot has pipped Wan-Bissaka in the pecking order. He has started every game for United this term, leaving the England U21 international with just four minutes of competitive action under the Dutch manager.
