Manchester United to refuse request by Argentina to rest Lisandro Martinez before start of World Cup
Manchester United are set to rebuff the Argentina FA’s appeal to leave the likes of Lisandro Martinez out of the final round of matches before the start of the World Cup, according to The Daily Mail.
The Old Trafford side are among the several Premier League clubs that will reject the request by the South American nation to rest their players.
La Albiceleste have effectively asked the Red Devils not to play the likes of Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho in the final club game before the tournament in Qatar commences.
The Argentine FA have already asked one team in the English top flight to release a star early. However, the unnamed club have not complied. Other PL sides will follow suit and resist the South American nation’s demands.
La Albiceleste want their players to be rested for the fixture in the English top flight on 12 and 13 November. The side captained by Paris-Saint Germain forward Lionel Messi are set to face the United Arab Emirates in a friendly on 16 November before commencing their Group C campaign.
Martinez has been one of the most important players for the Manchester-based club this season. The 24-year-old has formed a formidable partnership with 2018 French World Cup winner Raphael Varane.
The Argentine has been a constant in the Old Trafford side’s backline under Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager reunited with the centre-back in Manchester, signing him from Ajax in the recent transfer window.
With the prestigious tournament set to start in a few weeks, the football calendar has been congested. United had to play nine games in October. And we still have four more fixtures to go before the mid-season break.
