Patrice Evra sends a warning to Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire
Manchester United icon Patrice Evra has sent club captain Harry Maguire a message about his place in the Old Trafford side. The ex-Red Devil has urged fans to back the 29-year-old during his period in the starting lineup.
The England international started his first Premier League game for Man United in a while against West Ham United in a 1-0 win. And the defender put in a decent showing against the Hammers.
Speaking to the Daily Star (h/t Manchester Evening News), Evra, who spent eight years with the Red Devils during his playing career, hopes Maguire can find his form once again. However, the former left-back believes this is the 29-year-old’s last chance to prove himself.
“If he fails this opportunity I think he will have to leave the club. Now, if you are a true United fan, I’m begging you to give the man a chance and support him.
“I know he can do it and he’s going to have the full support of the manager and the players. It (his time) will come and when it does he needs to show us the player he is.”
Our captain has found himself on the peripheries of Erik ten Hag’s plans in recent weeks. The England international started the first two games of the current campaign alongside Lisandro Martinez.
Unfortunately, with Maguire and the Argentine in the backline, the Red Devils looked shaky and lost against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. Since the 4-0 loss at the Gtech Community Stadium, the 29-year-old has fallen down the pecking order.
Raphael Varane and Martinez have been the preferred partnership for the Dutch manager this season. And the French and Argentine duo have been solid in defence for the Old Trafford side.
Maguire continued to feature in the Europa League. However, he looked low on confidence. Unfortunately, an injury during the international break presented another setback for the centre-back.
The England international got his chance in the team due to Raphael Varane being sidelined. Victor Lindelof was also unavailable against David Moyes’ team.

Maguire was encouraging against the Hammers. However, the 29-year-old needs to bring consistency back into his game. It remains to be seen whether the centre-back is able to convince Ten Hag to give him a starting berth.
