Manchester United summer 2022 target Benjamin Pavard ‘unhappy’ at Bayern Munich
Benjamin Pavard, who Manchester United targeted in the summer of 2022, is ‘unhappy’ with his current role at Bayern Munich, according to Sky Sport in Germany and Sport1 (h/t Mirror).
The France international is not satisfied with being left out of the starting lineup in recent weeks. Noussair Mazraoui was in Julian Nagelsmann’s team ahead of the 26-year-old in the last two fixtures against Barcelona in the Champions League and FSV Mainz in the Bundesliga.
Pavard’s current contract expires at the end of the 2024 season. And Bayern are “unlikely” to extend the defender’s existing deal. Thus, the Bavarians are open to letting go of the 2018 French World Cup winner in January.
United manager Erik ten Hag likes the France international. The Dutch manager is a fan of the versatile player and a move for him next year is on the cards, with right-back a major concern for the gaffer.
Pavard has mostly played at right-back throughout his career. However, he is also capable of slotting in the centre of defence. That makes him a valuable squad player.
And the Red Devils could use someone of his qualities to call upon when need be. Currently, Diogo Dalot has cemented his place in the right-back spot. And the Portugal international has ousted Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has seemingly fallen out of favour.
The 23-year-old has started every game for the Old Trafford side this season. While his performances have been excellent, fatigue is a concern in a long and arduous campaign.
Ten Hag has preferred Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the backline. However, other defenders like Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have fallen down the pecking order. If either of them decides to leave for more game time, the Red Devils will evidently need to add depth.
