Manchester United begin contract negotiations with David de Gea
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been on the wrath of criticism from fans who believe his ball-playing activities are not up to the standard demanded by Erik ten Hag.
The Spaniard was the club’s standout player in an otherwise horrifying 2021-22 season and proved many doubters wrong with his superb performances. He deservedly won the Man United Players’ Player of the Year Award for the season.
With Ten Hag taking over, De Gea’s skill set might not on paper have made him the ideal keeper for the manager who is known for his style of wanting his team to play out from the back.
The situation was made worse when the team lost their first two league games, conceding six goals in the process. The loss to Brentford in particular raised serious questions about the veteran’s ability to function as a sweeper keeper.
There were many notable mistakes and one amongst them was the issue of De Gea not being able to control possession for long and his distribution was below par.
Ten Hag chose to switch it up for the next games which saw De Gea playing it long rather than from the back which saw the team come back to winning ways.
Clearly, Ten Hag showed his adaptation skills to tackle the issue at hand but the main issue of the Spanish keeper not being comfortable in the long run would continue to sustain in the long run and Ten Hag has refused to comment further on the subject ignited talks of the club looking at other targets.
“First we go to the winter and then we will talk about how we deal with the situation”
Hence, the future of De Gea is not completely safe with United rumoured to be looking at other goalkeeping targets including Diogo Costa and Unai Simon.

However, according to AS Sport, United and De Gea are in talks over a contracted extension which could see a reduction in the keeper’s present salary with the Spaniard admitting his desire to stay.
Ten Hag’s first season in charge was always supposed to be for the manager to get a full knowledge of all the available players and see which ones can actually help him in bringing the club back to the top.
