Rangers urged to make a move for out-of-favour Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged Rangers to sign out-of-favour Manchester United shot-stopper Tom Heaton. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur ace believes the 36-year-old is too good to be a third-choice keeper for the Red Devils.
Heaton made his way back to Manchester in 2021 from Aston Villa. The goalkeeper played for the Old Trafford side’s youth teams but never made the cut to feature for the senior squad in his previous spell.
Subsequently, the 36-year-old left United after several loan spells between 2005 and 2010 and joined Cardiff City permanently. The shot-stopper’s most notable spell came at Burnley, where under Sean Dyche, the Clarets had a fruitful spell in the English top flight.
The England international joined Villa in the summer of 2019. However, having fallen down the pecking order there, he opted to return to Manchester.
However, with David de Gea and Dean Henderson United’s ranks, game time was hard to come by for Heaton. The England international has featured just once for the Red Devils since his signing.
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), Robinson advised Rangers to make a move for the 36-year-old. He feels that the England international has been hard done by at United.
“If they can get him out of Man United, Tom would be an excellent option. He has not been given a fair chance at Man United. I suspect promises have been made by previous managers and nothing has come to fruition.”
“Tom is far better than being number three goalkeeper, no matter what club he is at. He is not at that stage of his career yet. He has so much to give.”
Currently, David de Gea is the number one in between the sticks for the Red Devils. The Spaniard has started every game for the Old Trafford side this season.
With Henderson’s departure in the summer of 2022, Heaton would have evidently hoped to be handed more opportunities under Erik ten Hag. However, United got Martin Dubravka on loan in the recent transfer window.

It seems unlikely that the 36-year-old will get a lot of game time under his belt in Manchester. Thus, it would be wise for him to part ways with the club in the upcoming transfer windows if he wants to make the most of his last few years as a professional footballer.
