Ralf Rangnick advised Manchester United to sign six players including Erling Haaland and Christopher Nkunku
Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has revealed that he had advised the club to sign six players, including Erling Haaland and Christopher Nkunku, during his time in the Old Trafford dugout.
The German took the reins in Manchester after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian had some torrid results that resulted in his sacking.
Speaking to Bild (h/t Evening Standard), Rangnick claimed that apart from the two aforementioned forwards, he asked the club to look at Josko Gvardiol, Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz and Dusan Vlahovic.
“It was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.
“That’s why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic.
“We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Haaland when they were still on the market.”
Rangnick’s astute work as an operator in football is seemingly why the Red Devils got him in as manager. Unfortunately, the club evidently did not back the German during his time at the club.
In the summer of 2021, United went into the market and added Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo to the squad. And fans were looking forward to the 2021/22 campaign under Ole.
However, the Norwegian was unable to live up to expectations. And it was evident that the club needed more reinforcements back then. Unfortunately, the hierarchy at Old Trafford did not listen to Rangnick.
In January 2022, United did not sign a single player. Stars like Vlahovic and Diaz joined Juventus and Liverpool, respectively. We seemingly did nothing to bring the rest of the names on the list, either, with Haaland taking the Premier League by storm at Manchester City.

Now, with Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout, it was apparent that the Dutch manager’s priorities on incomings in the recent transfer window changed. And we got the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony to the club.
Fans feel the Red Devils wasted the months they had under Rangnick. Hopefully, Ten Hag is not left out to dry with his suggestions.
