Cristiano Ronaldo could be handed a massive fine for his actions against Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United had their best performance under manager Erik Ten Hag’s reign with a splendid 2-0 victory over top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur. It was a performance which brought optimism about a better future to many Reds supporters.
A result and performance such as the one displayed by the team deserved all the praise and attention. However, it was scarred due to an incident involving superstar Cristiano Ronaldo who started the game on the bench and in the 89th minute went inside the tunnel creating confusion and insubordination amongst players and staff.
Post the victory, Ten Hag was asked what will be the consequences of the Portuguese’s actions to which he gave a stern today and admitted it has not gone unnoticed and will be dealt with.
Now, as per reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ten Hag has the backing of the United hierarchy in this matter and therefore has decided to leave Ronaldo out of the team for the important clash against Chelsea on the weekend.
It will be a huge blow to the player as well as the team considering the factum of the fixture towards our fight for a top-four finish. However, the incident was reminiscent of Sir Alex Fergusons’s words towards David Beckham at the time he was the gaffer which said:
“The minute a Man Utd player thought he was bigger than the manager, he had to go.”
Cristiano Ronaldo’s actions certainly imply that he considers himself bigger than the club and therefore can act out of frustration if not given minutes, such as in the case against Tottenham Hotspur.
It is very important to keep a check on player power in the dressing room as it has the capacity of becoming toxic and disrupting a good rhythm. Ten Hag, being a strict disciplinarian, is aware of that and hence in no way is taking the player walking away before the final whistle as a light incident.
According to Daily Express, along with an exclusion from the first team, United could also charge Ronaldo two weeks of his wages to set a precedent of how things are to be conducted in the future.
Once it was obvious that United would not be playing in the UEFA Champions League for the current season, Ronaldo made clear his desire to leave the club, just one year after arriving.
A dismal situation of power control is occurring between a manager appointed to bring back the good times to United and one of the legends of the game.
After yesterday’s incident, there is only one way the situation is headed which could have possibly been avoided had there been more efficient people controlling the activities of the club.
