Peter Schmeichel feels disappointed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s actions for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester United’s brilliant performance against Tottenham Hotspur was overshadowed by the antics thrown by Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the field while the match was still going on in a bid to show his frustration over not starting the game.

His actions have seen the wrath of many ex-players and pundits who believe Ronaldo disrespected the club, manager and fellow teammates with his selfish moves.

Speaking to 5Live (h/t Manchester Evening News), former United goalkeeper and a teammate of Ronaldo once Peter Schmeichel has also given his verdict on the incident and believes it was the first time in his life that he has been disappointed by the Portuguese superstar.

“It’s the first time I can say that I am disappointed with him.

Normally I back him, I understand his situation — we don’t need distractions like that, and that’s a disappointment, I would say.”

Schmeichel, who represented the club with a total of 386 appearances feels his actions would have let his teammates down who have been on a good run after a poor start to the campaign and understands the frustration of the player but believes it was not the ideal way to show his dissatisfaction.

Ronaldo is undoubtedly one of the legends of the game with numerous records set in his name. Never in his professional career has he experienced something like how this season is unfolding where he is, more often than not, coming off the bench.

Many could argue that it was a tipping point for the player who has achieved so much in his career that he felt right to show his displeasure in the manner he did.

However, one cannot disregard the fact that at 37, he is not the player that he once used to be and Ten Hag has been brought in to bring the good fortunes back to United and should do what he deems is best for the club.

His call to leave Ronaldo on the bench against Spurs paid dividends with an exemplary performance against a team sitting third in the league. Hence, instead of praise and applause for the performance, the five times Ballon d’Or winner chose to make things about himself and steal the limelight.

Suddenly, the homecoming which was met with excitement has turned sour and Ronaldo’s second spell at United has been underwhelming and disappointing.

It would be better if both parties part ways as soon as possible as a situation such as this has the chance of derailing the entire season, something Ten Hag would definitely be aware of.
