Real Madrid forward and Manchester United target Marco Asensio expected to leave for free next summer
Manchester United summer 2022 target Marco Asensio is expected to leave Real Madrid with Los Blancos preparing for his exit, according to Football Espana (h/t Express).
The Spaniard is in his final season with the 14-time Champions League winners. And along with the Red Devils, were all linked with the 26-year-old in the recent transfer window.
Madrid seem to have made up their mind with Brahim Diaz, who is on loan at AC Milan from Los Blancos, touted as the replacement for Asensio.
This leaves the door open for United and the other Premier League teams to sign the Spaniard on a pre-contract in January. However, the Red Devils face further competition with Barcelona in the mix as well.
Asensio was once considered the biggest prospect in world football. The 26-year-old regularly played in a team that consisted of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale.
However, over the years, injuries have hampered the forward’s career. The Spain international has found it hard to regain his form and get a lot of game time.
In the 2022/23 campaign, Asensio has rarely featured in Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The 26-year-old has not started a single game yet for Los Blancos this season, which could be a bother for him given that this is a World Cup year.
United signed Antony from Ajax in the recent transfer window for a hefty sum. The Brazilian has made an immediate impact in the team, scoring on his debut against Arsenal. Erik ten Hag seems to have also been able to rejuvenate the other forwards in the squad.

Asensio will evidently find it hard to get into the United starting XI, considering the competition for places up front. However, getting someone of the Spaniard’s quality on a free transfer would be a wise move to add depth to the squad.
