Michael Carrick ‘not surprised’ by the quality Christian Eriksen has brought to the Manchester United midfield
Manchester United icon Michael Carrick is “not surprised” by the quality Christian Eriksen has brought to the club. The former caretaker manager of the Red Devils is delighted with the Danish national.
Eriksen arrived in the summer of 2022 as a free agent. The 30-year-old had a decent short spell with Brentford last season. And Erik ten Hag’s side decided to get the Denmark international’s signature.
Speaking to club media via Manchester Evening News, Carrick, who spent 12 years at United during his playing career, is familiar with what Eriksen brings to the table. The ex-Red Devil played against the Denmark international when the 30-year-old was a star at Tottenham Hotspur.
“I’m not surprised one bit [by Eriksen’s form]. I played against him a lot. I watched him a lot. I like him a lot.
“He’s a fantastic footballer. He’s clever, he’s smart.”
Eriksen has been brilliant for United since his arrival. The Denmark international has started every game under the Dutch manager. And fans have been left surprised with the impact the 30-year-old has had in Manchester.
Ten Hag’s first two competitive games in the Old Trafford side’s dugout ended in defeats. Eriksen started as a centre-forward against Brighton & Hove Albion. And the 30-year-old played as the pivot at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, since the 4-0 loss to Brentford, Eriksen has been deployed in the number eight position. And Carrick feels the Danish national’s intelligence makes him a versatile player.
“It almost doesn’t matter what position he plays. He can adapt. He’s just a clever, intelligent footballer with great quality.
“I was pleased when we signed him, and he’s not surprised me one bit. He’s a top player.”
Eriksen played for the Denmark national side on international duty against Croatia and France. The 30-year-old scored a long-range goal in the 2-1 loss to Zlatko Dalic’s team. And the United star was brilliant against Les Bleus as the Red and Whites won 2-0.
