Argentina to ask clubs like Manchester United to rest players in the final matches before the start of the World Cup
Manchester United will be requested by Argentina to rest their players in the final Premier League weekend before the start of the World Cup, according to Doble Amarilla via Albiceleste Talks from The Spurs Express on Twitter (h/t Express).
The South American nation is set to travel to Qatar in November, where they will face Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland in the group stages. La Albiceleste will ask clubs not to play those who will be in the travelling party with Lionel Scaloni to avoid any late injuries.
However, the end decision lies with the respective sides. In England’s top flight, United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Brighton and Hove Albion and Aston Villa could be affected by the demand.
The Red Devils are set to face Fulham in the PL on 13 November in the final game before the commencement of the World Cup. Lisandro Martinez is the player who Argentina could ask not to be involved. It remains to be seen whether the Manchester-based club will heed the demands.
Martinez has become pivotal for United
The 24-year-old signed for United from Ajax in the recent summer transfer window. The Argentine has reunited with Erik ten Hag in Manchester.
Martinez has been a pivotal part of the starting XI at United since his arrival. The 24-year-old has been involved in every game the Red Devils have played this season.
While the defender did not have the best of starts to his career in a red shirt, he has bounced back strongly. Ten Hag lost the first two competitive fixtures of his reign in the Old Trafford side’s dugout.
Martinez started alongside Harry Maguire in the defeats. However, since pairing up with Raphael Varane, the Argentine has been a part of a United side on a four-game win streak in the league.
