Transfer News: Manchester City are interested in Alessandro Bastoni amid interest from Manchester United

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester City have joined the race to sign Alessandro Bastoni amid interest from Manchester United.

The centre-back has plenty of admirers across Europe following impressive displays for Inter Milan in the past few years. And now our neighbours have joined the race to sign him.

But the two Manchester sides are not the only ones interested in him from the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur also keeping tabs on the centre-back.

Bastoni joined Inter in the summer of 2017 but was immediately loaned back to his former side Atalanta BC. The 23-year-old then spent the next season on loan at Parma, but since then has become an important player for his side.

The centre-back’s current contract runs till 2024 (transfermarkt) and the Nerrazzuri value him at around £50 million. So landing the defender won’t be cheap.

United could do with a young centre-back like Bastoni. Harry Maguire has lost his place in the team, courtesy of the phenomenal partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at the back.

Victor Lindelöf is a fine option to have, but Bastoni would simply be better. Just 23, the Italian international would not only help in increasing the competition at the back but also help in adding depth to the squad.

But he won’t come easy nor cheap. With rivals also showing interest in the centre-back, it will be wise for Erik ten Hag to make a move as soon as possible. It remains to be seen if the Red Devils can secure his signature this January or next summer.
