Martin Dubravka set to return to Manchester United after picking up injury with Slovakia national team
Manchester United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is set to return to Carrington after picking up an injury with the Slovakia national team, according to the club’s official website (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Newcastle United loanee picked up a knock while training with the Falcons. Dubravka arrived at the Old Trafford side on deadline day to offer backup to David de Gea and Tom Heaton.
For the Slovakia national team, the 33-year-old has been handed 30 caps. Dubravka has not played much over the last year for the Falcons due to fitness issues. Fulham shot-stopper Marek Rodak has been deployed in between the sticks in the Man United goalkeeper’s stead.
Dubravka played every minute in goal for Slovakia during Euro 2020. Unfortunately, the Falcons failed to make it out of the group stage, losing to Sweden and Spain.
Dubravka adding depth at United
The Slovakia international was a regular in the Newcastle team up until the arrival of Nick Pope in the recent transfer window. In his time with the Red Devils, the 33-year-old has been an understudy as well.
Dean Henderson left Manchester for Nottingham Forest in the summer. And Erik ten Hag was left with De Gea and Heaton. Thus, the club evidently needed to bolster the goalkeeping department.
Dubravka is a player who has amassed vast Premier League experience over the years. The Slovakia international made 130 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions before moving on loan to Man United.
De Gea has started every game for the Red Devils in goal. The Spaniard had a shaky start to the 2022/23 campaign. However, the 31-year-old has made some key saves in recent weeks.
