Brandon Williams backs Manchester United captain Harry Maguire following criticism
Manchester United ace Brandon Williams has come to the defence of club captain Harry Maguire following criticism. The 22-year-old has backed the England international to give his all for the Red Devils.
Maguire has lost his place in the starting XI in recent weeks. The 29-year-old has been blamed for the Old Trafford side’s faltering defence. The captain has found himself on the bench mostly under Erik ten Hag.
Speaking to The Sportsman (h/t Manchester Evening News), Williams praises Maguire for his commitment at United. And the full-back reveals the players are not concerned about what people outside the club think.
“People don’t listen to the outside world. Harry will go into training a hundred per cent every day. Harry will give, whether he’s starting the game, whether he’s not starting the game, one hundred per cent.
“We don’t care about the outside world because the only thing that matters is the opinions on the inside. The opinions on the inside are the most important.”
Maguire started for United in the first two games of the season. However, negative results against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford have put the spotlight on the England international’s performances.
Ten Hag made some big changes to his starting lineup against Liverpool on matchday three. Maguire was dropped to the bench. And since then, the Old Trafford side have won four games on the trot in the Premier League.
The former Ajax head coach has preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martines in his back four. The duo have built a solid partnership for the Red Devils and Maguire has been benched for the last four league games.
When the Argentine and French national have started in defence, United have won every time. And that has not helped Maguire’s prospects.
Since his start against the Bees, the England international has started only against Real Sociedad. The Red Devils ended up losing the match at Old Trafford.

Maguire was bought by United for big money from Leicester City in 2019. However, the 29-year-old has not been able to get the fans on his side. And with Varane and Martinez seemingly cementing their place in Ten Hag’s team, it is evidently going to be a challenging task displacing any of them.
