Marcel Brands claims that Manchester United talk made new season difficult for Cody Gakpo
PSV director of football Marcel Brands has claimed that Manchester United transfer talks made preparations for the new season difficult for Cody Gakpo.
United were said to be interested in the 23-year-old winger along with Arsenal and Leeds United. However, despite making approaches no move could materialise between the two parties.
But Brand has now blamed United for making the season difficult for the Dutch winger. He has also claimed that Gakpo would have stayed back even if the right offer had come for him. Speaking to ED (h/t Daily Mail), the director laid blame on the Red Devils.
“Cody has had a difficult preparation with us because he has spoken with Manchester United. They didn’t come until mid-August and didn’t go through. I even think Cody wouldn’t have left at the end of the transfer window, if the right amount had been offered.”
This is an absurd allegation to make. The 23-year-old has started the new season in the best way possible. However, he could be referring to the player’s mental state in training sessions during that time.
He has already scored seven goals in six league appearances for his side. The winger grabbed a hat-trick in a 7-1 against FC Volendam last month.
There is no indication that the winger is suffering from any lack of preparation. United were interested in the winger, but no move could materialise. The Red Devils signed Antony from Ajax Amsterdam this summer.
Antony began his United career in the best possible way as the winger scored on his debut against Arsenal. The 22-year-old already looks settled in the team and could play a big part for them this season.
Despite his acquisition, signing Gakpo on top of that could have been beneficial. We are devoid of options in the centre-forward position, with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford suffering recent injuries.
