Lisandro Martinez calls Manchester United centre-back partner Raphael Varane a ‘legend’
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has called centre-back partner Raphael Varane a legend. The Argentine is delighted to pair up with the 2018 World Cup winner in the Red Devils’ backline.
Martinez and Varane have been the preferred choice in the back-four for Erik ten Hag this season. And the Argentine and French duo have been pivotal in the success the Manchester-based club has seen in recent weeks.
Speaking after the 2-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Zimbru Stadium via Manchester Evening News, Martinez stated that Varane’s qualities are evident for everyone to see. However, the 24-year-old also recognises the importance of players waiting in the wings.

“Everyone knows how good he is. He is a legend for me. I’m really happy to play with him at the back, but every player in the team is ready to play.
Every player is doing well and working hard. That’s the important point. It’s not just Varane, it is Harry, it is Luke Shaw, it is Donny van de Beek, it is everyone.”
Martinez arrived from Ajax this summer. The 24-year-old has reunited with his former manager in Manchester. Ten Hag seems to have full faith in the Argentine. The defender has featured in every single game United have played in the 2022/23 campaign so far.
The Manchester-based club did not have the best of starts to the season. We lost the first two games of the season. The Red Devils got off to their worst start to a league season in 101 years as we sit at the bottom of the table.
Martinez was partnered with Harry Maguire initially. However, after the 4-0 loss to Brentford on matchday two, the gaffer decided to make some major changes to the backline.

Tyrell Malacia has since replaced Luke Shaw at left-back. And the club captain has been displaced by Varane. Since then, we have won every game the Argentine and Frenchman have started in.
In the Premier League, United are on a four-game win streak, beating the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal. We also saw off Sheriff in Moldova. The only game the Red Devils have lost in between was the Real Sociedad match, in which Maguire and Victor Lindelof were in the starting XI.

Martinez and Varane have solidified the backline and brought stability to the team. The duo seem to complement each other with the French national’s leadership and the Argentine’s aggression. Hopefully, they can continue delivering for United.
