Manchester United number one David de Gea responds to ‘criminal’ Dean Henderson comments
David de Gea has nothing to say about the comments Dean Henderson made of his treatment at Manchester United last season. Instead, the Spaniard is focused on giving his best in the current campaign.
The England international barely got any minutes last season and joined Nottingham Forest on loan in the recent transfer window. Subsequently, the 25-year-old shared his frustration and unhappiness about his time in Manchester.
Henderson claims the Red Devils did not fulfil the promise of making him the preferred choice in goal. The England international said that it was “criminal” that he had been on the bench for most of the 2021/22 campaign.
De Gea’s form dwindled for United after the 2018 World Cup. The 31-year-old did not come back the same goalkeeper from Russia. The Spaniard seemed to have lost his confidence.
And after a shaky 2019/20 season, the end looked to be near for De Gea in Manchester. Henderson was brought back to the club in the summer of 2020 after his impressive loan spell with Sheffield United. And the 25-year-old shared minutes with the Spaniard.
However, the 2021/22 campaign saw De Gea get back to his best. Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News on Henderson’s comments, the 31-year-old declined to respond.
“I have to do my job, to try to be better every day. I don’t think it’s the time to talk about our team and what happened last season, we should be more focused on the season now. I have no comments about that.”
United started the new campaign under Erik ten Hag on a disappointing note. The Red Devils lost their opening to games in the Premier League. And fingers were pointed at De Gea.
Ten Hag seemingly wants the side to play from out the back. However, the 31-year-old shot-stopper is not known for his distribution. The Spaniard has evidently looked uncomfortable with the ball.

But the last few fixtures, which have seen United go on a four-game win streak in the league, have shown the quality De Gea possesses in between the sticks. The 31-year-old might not be the best with his feet, but his shot-stopping abilities are world-class.
Henderson is set to return to the club at the end of the season. However, it remains to be seen what United decide to do with the 25-year-old.
