Phil Jones has been left out of the 25-man Manchester United squad for the Premier League, via The Mirror. The 30-year-old had already not been included in the Europa League squad for the 2022/23 campaign.

Jones has been training with the reserve side alongside the likes of Brandon Williams, Teden Mengi and Axel Tuanzebe. The English centre-back has not trained with the senior side since their return to pre-season.

The Preston-born defender was signed by the Red Devils in 2011 from Balckburn Rovers. And for a few years, Jones was decent for the club. The 30-year-old was a regular in the side.

However, injuries have hampered Jones’ career at United. In the last two seasons, the centre-back has featured in just 13 games in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Jones has gone down the pecking order at United

Over the years, United have made a lot of additions to strengthen the centre-back position. In 2017, the club signed Victor Lindelof from SL Benfica. The Sweden international has been decent for the Red Devils.

United splashed the cash on Harry Maguire in 2019. The England international arrived from Leicester City. Since then, the 29-year-old has been made captain of the Manchester-based club.

Raphael Varane arrived at Old Trafford last summer from Real Madrid. Although the France international was sidelined on a few occasions, he showed his qualities when he played.

Lisandro Martinez is another addition made to the defence in the recent transfer window. The Argentine arrived from Ten Hag’s former club Ajax Amsterdam and has immediately slotted into the side. The 24-year-old has formed a solid partnership with Varane over the last few weeks.

The gaffer does not seem to fancy Jones. The Englishman has had a hard couple of seasons at United. A move away would be wise for both the player and the club.
