Chelsea lead Manchester United in race for Paris Saint-Germain advisor Luis Campos

Manchester United are behind Chelsea in the race for Paris Saint-Germain advisor Luis Campos, according to Le Parisien (h/t Mirror). The Blues want the Portuguese to be their new sporting director.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and the Red Devils’ chief executive Richard Arnold are looking to bring in someone to fill the position. However, The Blues are one step ahead as they are ready to offer Campos £7 million and give him a £260 million budget to build Graham Potter’s team.

Currently, the Portuguese seemingly oversees the recruitment side of things at PSG. The Ligue 1 outfit have evidently made some shrewd signings to strengthen Christophe Galtier’s squad.

Campos has previously worked as a manager. The 58-year-old has also worked as a scout at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho. He made his name as a sporting director when he took over the role at AS Monaco.

United in the race for Campos

The Monégasques had a successful period with Campos spearheading the transfers of players like Anthony Martial, Bernardo Silva and James Rodriguez, amongst other top players.

The Portuguese transfer market specialist also held the sporting director role at LOSC Lille. The French side went on to win Ligue 1 in the 2020/21 season.

Over the years at United, recruitment has been an issue for fans. We have had multiple managers come and go despite spending a lot of money in the transfer market. Ed Woodward seemingly oversaw the business side of things when he was in charge.

Some of the players that United bought for big money, such as Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, have failed to live up to expectations.

However, the Red Devils have made some shrewd signings this summer, albeit a bit on the expensive side. Christian Eriksen arriving on a free transfer has looked like a steal. Lisandro Martinez and Antony have brought aggressiveness to the side. Casemiro brings the experience of winning trophies with him.
